Evaluation Activity 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

This is our production company logo which we made for our film. It is called 'Immortal Productions'. We decided to keep the logo nice and simple as we did not want to take the focus away from the opening sequence. As this is only displayed for a few seconds, we thought it was alright to do so. By just keeping the logo in plain black and white colours, this fits in with our opening sequence as it is dark and mysterious.

We wanted the font to be simple so we just used white text in order for it to be plain. We chose for the font colour to be white as this looks extremely bold with a black background. We did try other colours but we did not feel that they went well with the opening sequence. The following fonts in the opening sequence which show the actors names and who produced the film are also in white and so we wanted to keep it consistent. This makes it looks more professional which is the look we were going for.

We chose to call it 'Immortal Productions' as the name sounds unique and is quite catchy. This name shows dominance and creates an indestructible look which is also what our opening sequence shows.

We were given a choice on whether to create our own production company logo or use an existing one. We chose to create our own as this is more effective. We did research which production companies we could have used and we actually came across Film4 Productions which we thought fitted in well for our film as they cover many films which are just like ours due to budget etc. for example, Four Lions.

Here is some information I found on Wikipedia about the production company:

Film4 Productions is a British film production company owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The company has been responsible for backing a large number of films made in the United Kingdom. The company's first production was Walter, directed by Stephen Frears, which was released in 1982.
Prior to 1998, the company was identified as Channel Four Films or FilmFour International. Later, the outfit was re-branded as FilmFour, to coincide with the launch of a new Digital TV channel of the same name. The company cut its budget and staff significantly in 2002, due to mounting losses, and was re-integrated into the drama department of Channel 4. In 2004, Tessa Ross became head of both Film4 and Channel 4 drama. The name "Film4 Productions" was introduced in 2006 to tie in with the relaunch of the FilmFour broadcast channel as Film4.

The link to their website is:  http://www.film4.com/film4-productions

Other production companies which could produce our film in the future are BBC Films, British Lion Films and DNA Films. All these production companies are based in the United Kingdom. DNA Films produced Love Actually which is one of the film posters I analysed.
Here is a definition of production companies from Wikipedia:
A production company provides the physical basis for works in the realms of the performing arts, new media art, film, television, radio, and video.
The production company may be directly responsible for fundraising for the production or may accomplish this through a parent company, partner, or private investor. It handles budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the supply with talent and resources, the organization of staff, the production itself, post-production, distribution, and marketing. Production companies are often either owned or under contract with a media conglomerate, film studio, entertainment company, or Motion Picture Company, who act as the production company's partner or parent company. This has become known as the "studio system". They can also be mainstream independent (see Lucasfilms) or completely independent (see Lionsgate). In the case of TV, a TV production company would serve under a television network. Production companies can work together in co-productions.

Advertising revenue is where production companies make most of their profit. Our film had no actual budget and all clothing, props and equipment was already owned by us. Independant films tend to have the storyline made up by a cast member and they normally do not have a lot of credits because they do not employ as many people. As we are also an independant film, we decided to follow this.

We researched different ways in which we could distribute our film and the ones we found that could apply to us were either film festivals or uploading the film online. Four Lions was shown through a film festival which is why we thought it could apply to us. A production company which helps distribute films through this is Magnolia Pictures.

The final way in which we thought we should distribute our film was by uploading it onto Youtube. By doing this, anyone around the world can view it and so therefore we are not restricting our target audience. Youtube is easily accessible and everyone can access the internet and therefore get onto our film.
